Nobby Beach urban revitalisation

This render has been developed for illustrative purposes only and not for construction.

Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 (Stage 3) provides the opportunity to support the renewal of neighbourhoods surrounding new light rail stations, while improving access for the community and visitors.

The urban revitalisation at Nobby Beach will enhance the precinct with improved connectivity, landscaping, safety and accessibility – creating a vibrant public and social space for residents, businesses, and visitors to enjoy.

The revitalisation works will be delivered in two stages:

Stage 1 will commence in early October 2025 and be completed prior to the December school holiday period.

Stage 2 will commence in early February 2026 and continue until mid-2026. Further details will be shared prior to the start of Stage 2.

A respite period from works will be in place from December 2025 to early February 2026 to provide businesses and residents with relief during the busy summer trading season.

Stage 1 works (Lavarack Road to Chairlift Avenue)

Stage 1 works are scheduled to commence in early October 2025 and include:

  • Establishment of temporary construction areas with fencing to safely separate works from pedestrians and motorists

  • Removal of existing, and construction of new, concrete and paved footpaths and kerbs

  • Non-destructive digging, excavation, spoil removal, concreting, saw cutting and jackhammering

Parking impacts

  • All parking on the eastern side of the precinct (in front of businesses between Lavarack Road and Chairlift Avenue) will be removed for Stage 1 works

Traffic impacts

To ensure works can be completed safely and pedestrian movements are effectively managed, changes will made to how the space is accessed, including:

  • Removal of the northbound traffic movement on the Gold Coast Highway Service Road, between Lavarack Road and Chairlift Avenue

  • Vehicles turning into Chairlift Avenue will only be able to access Chairlift Avenue and Great Hall Drive

  • Southbound vehicles on the Gold Coast Highway Service Road will continue to access Chairlift Avenue, Great Hall Drive and the Albicore Street and Chairlift Avenue intersection

  • Albicore Street and Chairlift Avenue intersection will remain open with all movements available

  • Wave Street intersection will remain open with all movements available

  • Variable message signage will be in place to help motorists navigate the area.

Further details regarding Stage 2 works will be provided ahead of works commencing next year.

Project timeline

Major Gold Coast Light Rail works commenced in September 2023 in the Nobby Beach precinct and are ongoing.

The Nobby Beach precinct has a network of existing underground utilities including sewer, water, drainage and telecommunications, as well as above ground electricity.

These works involve a complex network of underground and above-ground utilities, including sewer, water, drainage, telecommunications and electricity. Much of this infrastructure must be relocated while maintaining services and traffic access.

Much of this infrastructure must be relocated while maintaining services and traffic access.

Significant planning has been undertaken to sequence these works in a way that minimises impacts to the community and allows businesses to continue operating.

Trader Survey

We would like to thank all businesses in Nobby Beach who previously completed the local trader survey.

The information received provided our construction team with a thorough understanding of key operating hours, how deliveries occur in the area and how on-street parking is utilised. The details have been considered as part of construction staging plans.

You can find out more about these changes by clicking the Traffic and parking tab on this page.

Current traffic and parking changes

On-street parking between Wave Street and the turn around on Gold Coast Highway Service Road around is available.

The new turn around opened in April 2024 and is available to use.

Waste Collection

During construction of Stage 3 in Nobby Beach, temporary traffic changes are in place on the Gold Coast Highway, Gold Coast Highway Service Road and side streets. This may require changes to how waste collection trucks access properties to collect general waste, recycling and green organics.

The City of Gold Coast’s waste management team is working closely with Stage 3 construction contractor John Holland to reduce impacts to residential and commercial waste collection services.

Changes may look different for each property and may change throughout the course of construction. We will keep you informed about important changes.

For more information, you can view the City of Gold Coast factsheet on waste collection.
